The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and interna-tional level. About 850 people from more than 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.
Two ERC-funded PhD positions are now open in the field of Medical Parasitology and Infection Biology at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute Basel (http://www.swisstph.ch, affiliated with the University of Basel).
Two ERC-funded PhD Positions in the area of functional genomics and evolution of antibiotic resistance (starting in Winter 2020/2021)
The successful applicants will work in a multidisciplinary research environment focusing on experimental evolution, bacterial genomics, and genomic epidemiology. The goal of this project is to understand the within-host evolution of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The project will make use of bacterial strains generated in the laboratory as well as clinical M. tuberculosis isolates from countries with a high burden of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Because M. tuberculosis is a Class 3 pathogen, the successful candidates will spend a significant amount of time working under Biosafety-Level-3 Laboratory containment.
The project is funded through a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant recently awarded to Prof. Sébastien Gagneux. Salary will be according to the regulations of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Candidates should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in life sciences preferentially involving practical work using laboratory techniques in (molecular) microbiology and/or cell biology. Experience in ecology/evolution and handling of next-generation sequencing data is a plus.
